Gracias!
English Translation : Hello! My name is Tamara Trinidad González, I am a Certified Professional Midwife in Puerto Rico and I am part of the NACPM Board of Directors. We are currently in our annual Bigger Table Fund campaign, which is a very important monetary fund that allows us to create, and expand access to cover the costs of the certification and licensure exam, especially for communities of color, indigenous communities and also LGBTIQ+ communities.
It is a fund that has really contributed a lot to many midwives over the years and we want to expand it even further. We would like it to become a fund that not only helps us at the end of our program with those licensing and certification costs but we also want it to support us while we are pursuing the midwifery program. To cover so many expenses of books, materials, equipment, transportation, many things. So we urge you to please donate, you can donate today and look for the links so that you can help us expand this fund, which is very important.
In my case, when I had to apply for the certification exam to be certified as a Certified Professional Midwife, once I finished my studies, the exam was not given in my country nor was there a remote alternative as exists right now. I had to travel, get on a plane, manage logistics of stay, transportation and family support to be able to achieve it and thanks to the Bigger Table Fund I was able to cover a large part of those expenses. Like me, there are many other midwives who have benefited and have been greatly relieved, so we urge you to please help us share this message and help us donate and expand this fund. Thank you! |

NACPM is pleased to announce our next CPM Clinical Practice Webinar Series presentation of 2024! Please register to join us on Thursday, September 5th, 2024 at 1:00PM. In this live free webinar, Dr. Elise Erickson, PhD, CNM, FACNM, will discuss the current understanding of the scope of postpartum hemorrhage and related morbidity as well as why current tools fail to predict PPH in 40% of cases and how oxytocin is related to these outcomes. She will also present her current research which is digging deeper into our understanding of variation in oxytocin influences the body (genetic & epigenetic) and how these differences between people may be shaped by our environments and influence oxytocin function or hemorrhage. |

This scholarship provides funds for education-related expenses such as books and school fees. Our goal is to empower future midwives with the resources they need to succeed, ultimately improving maternal and infant health outcomes within the BIPOC community in Houston and across the United States.
In partnership with NACPM, this scholarship provides financial assistance to BIPOC students pursuing midwifery education. It offers $5,000 to one student and $2,500 each to two students, covering expenses like books and school fees. |

The Tanya Khemet Taiwo scholarship seeks to address the lack of diversity within the field of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) by investing in the journey’s of Black and Indigenous midwives. This scholarship honors the work of Tanya Khemet Taiwo, the longest serving Black woman on NACPM’s Board of Directors, as well as an exemplary educator, researcher, epidemiologist, and community health innovator. This scholarship seeks to invest in the journey’s of midwives who share similar visions for a more well rounded Certified Professional Midwife field, committed to serving more at-risk, and medically underserved populations. This scholarship is an expansion on NACPM’s existing funds to support students who are from communities that are the most in need of care. This initiative recognizes the transformative power of concordant care; care that establishes trust and connection between the birthing person and their midwife through mutual understanding and similar life experiences. |
| Meet Shakari Lockett - A 2023 TKT Scholarship Recipient |
| | Shakari Lockett is one of NACPM’s Tanya Khemet Taiwo scholarship recipients. Shakari’s journey towards becoming a midwife is one in which she has overcome many challenges and adapted to ever-changing environments with poise. Shakari has utilized the resources around her and within her to navigate her journey as a mother and future midwife. In doing so, she has gained invaluable experience that has made her a more resilient, resourceful, and determined individual. These qualities are essential to any midwife, as Tanya Khemet Taiwo |

Shakari’s dual-enrollment in a midwifery program and as a leader in a non-profit organization, she strives to bridge the gaps to accessing care and improve quality maternal care access for all. Shakari seeks to foster a more inclusive midwifery field by looking for guidance within existing community assets to help empower her entrance into the profession. Shakari wishes to provide care for birthing people without them needing to compromise their basic needs, seeing herself as a safe space for new Black midwives to learn from, as well as one who is dedicated to protecting, preserving, and improving community welfare. Shakari’s understanding of the need for an inclusive and accessible Certified Professional Midwife field imbues her role as a future midwife, and leader of change.
Since 2021, NACPM has distributed $51,200. We are half way to our goal of raising $30K to distribute in 2024. We are actively applying for grants to sustain this initiative and we encourage our generous donors to consider contributing directly to this fund.
2024 Applications are open and being accepted until September 30th, 2024 |

| | | Illinois Birth Equity Initiative Becomes Law
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Birth Equity Initiative into law, celebrates Medicaid expansion that expands insurance coverage during and after pregnancy with the goal of lowering infant and maternal mortality rates, especially for Black Illinoisans."
"The law requires insurers that provide state-regulated health care plans to cover pregnancy and postpartum services for covered individuals, including midwife services, doula visits and lactation consultants for up to 12 months after the end of a pregnancy. Licensed or certified midwives will need to be covered by insurance providers starting in 2025, while all other outlined services must be covered by January 2026."
Black midwife, Jeanine Valrie Logan, founder of the Chicago Southside Birth Center and "leader at Chicago Beyond, the philanthropic organization hosting the signing ceremony, expressed her vision of a society where Black women are continually cared for and kept safe, well beyond pregnancy and childbirth." |
| | | MA-NACPM is celebrating a historic "win" this summer. Alongside our allies and colleagues at ACNM, MA-ACOG, and the Bay State Birth Coalition, we are proud to have helped secure a sweeping perinatal health omnibus bill for the State. Among its many provisions, the new law will establish a Board of Registration in Midwifery which by statute will be majority CPM and have responsibility for writing regulations governing CPM practice and community-based care in the State. This new law also mandates public payer (Medicaid, MassHealth) coverage for CPM services--regardless of location of birth. After decades of caring for families without formal integration into the State's perinatal care systems, we are thrilled to enter this new chapter. We are anticipating a 1-2 year period for implementation and promulgation of rules and regulations. CPMs in Massachusetts are likely to be fully licensed and carrying the credential of LCPM by September 2026. |
| | | The North Carolina chapter of NACPM has been busy all summer. Our Board members have been working hard, preparing to go back to the legislature in January to once again submit our bill to license CPMs. Nicole Havelka, our Board President, is wrapping up production on a short documentary film about CPMs in NC called A Midwife Solution that she developed with Honey Head Film Productions. Nicole and several other facilitators are holding fundraising screenings throughout NC to premiere the documentary in September. All ticket proceeds will be dedicated to NC ACPM's legislative efforts. The film will be available to the public after screenings wrap up at the end of September.
On August 22nd NC ACPM presented to the NC Child Fatality Task Force in and effort to gain their interest in studying and recommending legislation for CPM licensure to NC law makers.Next month we will hold a 3 day Board retreat at the beach for team building, as well as short and long term planning. |
| | | | | We’re asking every member to consider a $10 donation for every birth they attend in 2024. Imagine the impact, if every one of their clients also donated $10 to support their midwife’s profession! Help make this campaign a success by making a donation today. |
