| | | | MIDWIFERY AND MATERNAL HEALTH IN THE NEWS |
| | | Midwife training problems Cal State Fullerton is now the only program in the state accepting students who want to become nurse midwives. The only other program at UC San Francisco has paused admissions while it changes to a doctoral degree. The move has concerned maternal care advocates, who say the change will make training longer and more expensive in a time where access to maternal care is dwindling. |

| | | | | Family physicians in rural hospitals and their impact on cesarean delivery rates The U.S. is experiencing a maternal health crisis, particularly in rural areas. This issue is compounded by rising rates of severe maternal morbidity and mortality. Family physicians often fill critical gaps in care in rural areas where obstetricians are scarce. This study examined how the presence of family physicians in rural hospitals impacts cesarean delivery rates and the overall quality of care during childbirth. |

| | | | | Pregnancy changes the brain more than previously known, study finds There has been “so much about the neurobiology of pregnancy that we don’t understand yet,” said senior study author Dr. Emily Jacobs, associate professor in the department of psychological and brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in a news briefing on the study. “And it’s not because women are too complicated. … It’s a byproduct of the fact that the biomedical sciences have historically ignored women’s health. It’s 2024, and this is the first glimpse we have at this fascinating neurobiological transition.” |

| | | Feds rarely punish hospitals for turning away pregnant patients Just a dozen hospitals have been fined for refusing to treat patients — pregnant or not — over the past two years, an Associated Press analysis of civil monetary penalties issued by the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General found. It took years for the government to decide those penalties. |

| | | | | | | | | Neuroanatomical changes observed over the course of a human pregnancy Pregnancy is a period of profound hormonal and physiological changes experienced by millions of women annually, yet the neural changes unfolding in the maternal brain throughout gestation are not well studied in humans. Leveraging precision imaging, we mapped neuroanatomical changes in an individual from preconception through 2 years postpartum. Pronounced decreases in gray matter volume and cortical thickness were evident across the brain, standing in contrast to increases in white matter microstructural integrity, ventricle volume and cerebrospinal fluid, with few regions untouched by the transition to motherhood. This dataset serves as a comprehensive map of the human brain across gestation, providing an open-access resource for the brain imaging community to further explore and understand the maternal brain. |

| | | Menstrual Cycle Hormone Fluctuations Can Alter Brain Network Dynamics Recent neuroimaging research suggests that female sex hormone fluctuations modulate brain activity. Nevertheless, how brain network dynamics change across the female menstrual cycle remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the dynamical complexity underlying three menstrual cycle phases (i.e., early follicular, pre-ovulatory, and mid-luteal) in 60 healthy naturally-cycling women scanned using resting-state fMRI. Our results revealed that the pre-ovulatory phase exhibited the highest dynamical complexity (variability over time) across the whole-brain functional network compared to the early follicular and mid-luteal phases, while the early follicular showed the lowest. |

| | | Breastfeeding, Chestfeeding, and Lactating Parents’ Experiences With Online Support Groups: An Integrative Review Specific subpopulations of breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and lactating parents and their partners found comfort in online support groups because they normalized more unique feeding practices and offered a space to provide and receive encouragement. Additionally, this review includes fathers/partners as a previously ignored subpopulation who benefit from education and support with breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and lactation. This subpopulation is also an area for expanded research on the use of online support groups by partners of lactating parents.
