Practice Resource 2026.1: CPM Pharmacology Competencies

This practice resource is intended to clarify pharmacology competencies associated with the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential and to support safe, evidence-based access to medications and devices consistent with midwifery practice. This resource distinguishes between entry-level pharmacology competencies required of all CPMs and additional competencies associated with the full scope of the credential. It provides guidance for education, training, and documentation pathways that support expanded prescriptive authority while maintaining professional accountability, client safety, and alignment with evolving standards of care.

Expanding CPM Practice and Skills Beyond Entry Level

This practice resource is intended to guide Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in expanding their clinical knowledge and skills beyond the foundational entry-level scope of the credential. It supports CPMs in responsibly integrating advanced procedures and competencies into their practice in alignment with evolving healthcare evidence, professional standards, and state regulatory frameworks. This resource outlines the expectations for education, training, documentation, and competency maintenance that must accompany practice expansion, while emphasizing professional accountability, client safety, and adherence to the full scope of the CPM credential.
